This was the Aretha Franklin, fresh out of her father's Baptist church, who stunned the music world with a style completely shaped by her experience as a trained gospel singer. Her approach to the blues and secular music was solely influenced by years of traveling from church to church, city to city, competing with the best singers in the gospel field. Many people were disturbed by her singing "church music" with a sinful words. But, she wasn't the first. Ray Charles had come before her, but his impact wasn't as strong as Aretha's because her stage mannerisms were also in play. Her stage presence was exactly the same as emotional singers in the black Baptist church (getting happy, breaking into the Holy dance, moaning, etc.)
